Punta Cana is located at the south-eastern tip of the Dominican Republic. Some of the best beaches in the world can be found here, with dazzlingly white sand, turquoise waters, and coconut palms growing right down to the sea's edge. A wide variety of water sports are available here: windsurfing, sailing, kayaking, pedaloes, bodyboarding, and snorkeling. Without doubt, the best place for diving in the country is the Parque Nacional del Este, 37 miles south of Arena Gorda, including cave diving in the Padre Nuestro cave.
Discover Punta Cana Ecological Park, a protected area covering over 2,000 acres and containing 80 species of birds, 160 species of insects, 500 plant varieties, and a maritime area that includes four miles of coral reef. The park organizes guided tours that enable you to explore this wonderful natural zone. Particularly outstanding is the area known as Ojos Indígenas, because of its 11 freshwater lagoons.
Excursions on horseback in the interior of the park or along the coast are also available. In Del Este National Park, a natural sanctuary formed mainly by semi-humid forests and the island of Isla Saona, see one of 400 caves, many with cave paintings by the Tainos, inhabitants of the island until the Spanish settlers arrived. Take a glass-bottom boat with the whole family to the Marinarium, a few miles from Arena Gorda.
